Today’s Meeting

At today’s meeting, Cesar Morales will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Peter Higgins will offer the invocation.

Rio Lindo School Teacher Honored

On Thursday, February 4th, the Rotary Club of Oxnard bestowed its most recent teacher recognition honor upon Mrs. Patricia Avila, a teacher at Rio Lindo School. Ms. Avila truly embodies Service above Self in daily practice in and out of the classroom. She supports a positive school climate through her many volunteer activities, while also serving on the school’s Parent Teacher Association for many years. She has been an active leader who continues to support family strengthening activities for the Rio Lindo community. In addition to Patricia’s volunteer work at the school, she gives her time outside of work to further serve others in the community. Her years of unwavering service embody the values that make her worthy of Rotary Teacher Recognition.

Mark your calendars for our next teacher recognition, which will be Tuesday, February 16th, at 2:25 p.m. We will be honoring a teacher at Frank Middle School in the Oxnard School District. Frank Middle School is located at 701 North Juanita Avenue, which runs off of Camino Del Sol, between Oxnard Blvd. and Rose Avenue. All Rotarians are welcome to attend the presentation of the basket!

Nyeland Center Proposal Passes

“We’ve done it,” so said Supervisor John Zaragoza upon hearing the news that Nyeland Acres residents voted in favor of a special tax to fund the only community center in Nyeland Acres. According to the Ventura County Star, our own Mike Barber did “a happy dance” upon hearing the news.

Our club joined other contributing members of the community and donated funds to help the project happen. Although the Ventura County Board of Supervisors conditionally agreed in August to pay up to $450,000 of the $600,000 cost of buying and upgrading the community center, the deal was contingent on passage of the special tax by registered voters in the community.

Basketball Tournaments Approach

For the 47th year, our club is proud to sponsor the Oxnard Rotary Club Girls Basketball tournament this weekend, February 13 - 15. With 400 girls participating over two days, in four divisions, the tournament proves to be exciting and successful. Watch for sponsorship and scoring opportunities for this event and for the 68th Annual Boys Tournament in March.
