News and Notes: March 8, 2016

Today marks International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Events that celebrate the accomplishments of women are being held worldwide, along with a call to income equality for women. Rotarians are also marking International Women’s Day with, among other things, an International Women’s Day Breakfast - womeninrotary.org.au - supported by Rotary Clubs from around the world.

Today’s Meeting

At today’s meeting, Gary Trow will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Steve Lee will offer the invocation.

Teacher Honors Continue

The Club continues to honor special teachers that make a difference in our community. On March 3rd, the Club bestowed this honor upon Hueneme High School Special Education teacher Mrs. Debra Langley.

Those who have worked with her know exactly why she would be receiving an award for being an outstanding educator. Debbie always puts her students’ needs first, and many students return to the school to visit her, and thank her for helping them throughout their high school experience. As a special education teacher, Debbie develops close relationships with her students who have many obstacles to overcome. She is extremely patient, understanding, and kind. Students feel very comfortable coming to her for advice or for a shoulder to cry on. As a co-worker, Debbie is one who will step up to the plate when something needs to get done. Her career is one that her peers look up to and strive to have that same kind of impact on their students. Joining in the presentation of this honor were Past Presidents Dr. Gary Davis and George Benz, Club President Mark Spellman, Hueneme High School Principal Gary Mayeda, and Ventura County Credit Union Community Outreach Officer Marilyn Peake.
