Last Week’s Meeting

Our speaker last week was the City of Oxnard Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Susan Duenas. Susan is new the Oxnard department — just four months — but had 14 years in disaster preparedness with the County of Ventura before that, and has experience in the area of disaster preparation going back to the Los Angeles riots. Susan explained how emergency management systems are coordinated, from the city level right on up to the federal resources that might be needed if the event grows beyond the local jurisdiction’s ability to handle it.

Since September 11, Ventura County has received $25 million for emergency preparedness services. Additionally, the City offers CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) throughout the year, where local citizens can be trained to be first responders in the event of an emergency. The next class is slated for the fall, or early 2015. The classes are 3 hours, once a week for six weeks. Check out the city’s website and social media for information about the next class.
