Hello Rotarians and Happy Tuesday!
Today’s Meeting
At today’s meeting, John Puglisi will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Ed Gibbs will offer the invocation. Our program today will be about the Oxnard Chamber’s Young Entrepreneur’s Academy (YEA!)
In the Recent Past . . .
Your bulletin editor was delinquent in publishing last week’s bulletin, so recent meetings have given us some accolades, congratulations and such . . . George Benz continues to work on the Salama water well project and grant, and hopes for a Texas-size Texas Hold’Em tournament in October . . . we are happy to have Bob England back with us regularly, feeling well and looking great . . . Did you know that John McDougal, Oxnard native and long-time member, almost followed his dad into the local car business, where he had a dealership right on Oxnard Blvd? . . . or that Mark Spellman wanted to be a dentist originally, but found his business calling later in life?
See what you miss when you miss our meetings? “Laughter is sweet when enjoyed alone. But it becomes sweeter when you enjoy it together with the people around you.” (Isrealmore Ayivor)
In The Near Future . . .
Come one, come all, to our last teacher recognition of the year: This Thursday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Rio Del Mar School Library, 3150 Thames River Drive, in River Park.
The Strawberry Festival approaches!! We still have just a spot or two left to serve beer, but remember that you must attend the RBS training and get certified before you may play barkeep! The Group 6 Mixer has been postponed to sometime in September . . . if you had it on your calendar for Wednesday, take it off!
The Rotary Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday, September 5 at Sterling Hills, See Chair Tim Laubacher for many volunteer opportunities . . . If you are a Paul Harris fellow, you are a member of the Selection Committee that will select recipients of the honor this year, see Patrick Mullin for more information or questions . . . the Demotion Dinner is scheduled for June 24, more info to follow soon . . .
On This Day in History
In 1992, a Los Angeles jury acquitted four police offers who had been charged with using excessive force in arresting black motorist Rodney King a year earlier. The announcement of the verdict, which enraged the black community, prompted widespread rioting throughout much of the sprawling city. It wasn’t until three days later that the arson and looting finally ended. The acquitted police officers were later convicted of violating Rodney King’s civil rights in a federal court trial. Rodney King died in 2012 at the age of 47 of an accidental drowning.
