Happy Tax Day Rotarians!
If you are among the more than 100 million taxpayers that have already filed your return, reward yourself with one of the many Tax Day Deals being offered by various businesses, from free shredding, to curly fries, to chips and salsa and free drinks.
While we don’t expect to see our CPA Rotarians at today’s meeting, we hope to see Dick Regnier, who will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Bob England, who will offers the invocation. Robin Paggi will be our speaker today, discussing a new law signed by Governor Brown that could increase claims by employees about religion in the workplace.
Why is April 15 Tax Day anyway? When Congress first introduced the income tax through the 16th amendment in 1913, the due date was March 1. It was later pushed back to April 15 to allow IRS workers to spread the work over a longer period of time, but many speculate that the later due date allowed the government to hang onto the refund money longer, thereby earning more interest.
Last Week’s Meeting
We welcomed to our meeting Sandra Delgado from the office of Julia Brownley, U.S. Representative of the 26th Congressional District. We also had a live demonstration by the Ventura County Search and Rescue K-9 Team, and a very interesting program about the many different ways these dogs provide law enforcement assistance throughout the county.
Norm Bernstein was honored by the Interact kids, in recognition of the many devoted hours he spends helping them and the faculty advisors with projects and guidance. Along with a big thank you note, Norm also received a deck of cards, each with a note from a student about why they are thankful for Norm. A very special “52 card pick-me-up.” Congratulations Norm!
