Hello Rotarians!
At today’s meeting, the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Larry Reilly and Gary Davis will lead us in the invocation.
Last Week’s Meeting
At last week’s meeting, we were updated on the many Rotary activities, both those in the recent past and the near near future! Gary Davis updated us on the success of the career fair. With thanks to club organizer Phyllis Throckmorton other members in attendance, the school district successfully presented the 29th annual career fair! Let’s plan to make the 30th anniversary fair a great success too!
Norm Bernstein reported on a RYLA preparation meeting. The club is sponsoring 4 students to RYLA this year (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), which is held the end of April. We look for a report from Norm after that!
Our District Assembly was held last weekend at Pacific High School. Our newly minted President Elect Nominee (aka Vice President) Mark Spellman filled the club in on the assembly activities, including PRLS 1 which he attended while there. (“PRLS?” ‘Potential Rotary Leader Seminar”? . . . ‘Persuasive Reliable Loyal Sincere’? . . . ‘Please Recycle Lazy Students?’ . . . I have no idea, and apparently there is no right answer, so you can come up with your own!)
Our speaker last week was Douglas Kmiec, legal scholar and former Ambassador to Malta under President Obama. Ambassador Kmiec is now a professor at Pepperdine University School of Law, and is running as an Independent for the 26th Congressional District. Ambassador Kmiec gave us a presentation about his diplomatic career, and why he is running for congress.
By the way, if you are the anonymous donor to Rob Foster’s crop walk, who pledged but didn’t pay, please see him!
Teacher Recognition
Our penultimate teacher recognition was conducted this past Thursday at Channel Island High School. Teacher Dan Lucas with this month’s recipient. Mr. Lucas has taught in the CIHS science department since 1990 and has served as the Science Department Chairperson for the last 10 years. A leader in his department, the principal regards Mr. Lucas as a master-level teacher. He goes beyond to give the best of himself and dedicates his time wholeheartedly to his students Mr. Lucas has been the Math/Engineering/Science Achievement (MESA) advisor for 17 years, and this year they have taken CIHS to greater competitions, winning more medals at the MESA competition held at UCSB than any other institution represented.
Thanks to all Rotarians who joined in presenting Mr. Lucas with this special recognition.
