Happy April Fool’s Day!
Among the theories of April Fool’s Day is that of biblical times, when it is said that April 1 was the day that Jesus was sent from Pontius Pilate to Herod and back again, a journey described as a “fool’s errand.” The Romans are said to have celebrated a festival of practical jokes sometime around the time of March equinox which falls close to the day. Others subscribe to the theory from British folklore where a 13th century King, who was said to have declared every road he walked as public property, was denied entry to a part of town in Nottinghamshire. The king then sent armies to the town who were perplexed to find all people engaging in stupid activities such as drowning fish. Upon hearing about the shenanigans, the king is said to have declared the town too foolish to warrant punishment - thus giving rise to the idea that 1 April was a fool’s day.

Teacher Recognition
President-Elect George Benz, Norm Bernstein and John McDougal joined Gary Davis last week to bestow our Teacher Recognition honor upon Eric Steiner, and eighth grade math teacher at Haydock Intermediate School in the Oxnard School District. Mr. Steiner is one of the most experienced members of the Haydock staff, and his leadership in the areas of data-driven instruction and transition to the Common Core State Standards has been key to the school’s advancement in those areas. He is a member of the district’s Common Core Math Advisory Team, and regularly gives of his time to assist struggling students before, during, and after the school day. He is also an Air Force veteran of the Gulf War.
Our next Teacher Basket Recognition will be May 1 at Rio Del Mar Elementary School. Stay tuned for details
