Did you know that each year Rotary International sponsors some of the world’s most dedicated and brightest professionals to study at Rotary Peace Centers? Academic fellowships are offered at major educational institutions around the world, and graduates of the programs can receive either a Masters degree or a professional development certificate in Peace Development and Conflict Resolution.
On this day in history in 1852, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo joined with several other investors to launch their namesake business. Taking advantage of the growing demand for cross-country shipping spurred by the gold rush, the company shipped its first loads of freight to mining camps in Northern California in July of that year. Several years later the company formed the Overland Mail Company, and began providing regular mail and passenger service on the “Butterfield Line.” By 1866 the company was the unrivaled leader in transportation in the West. In 1905, the banking portion of the business split off and established headquarters in San Francisco. Wells Fargo remains one of the biggest banks in the country.
