Today is also National Chocolate Covered Nut Day, yum . . . . did you know that both nuts and chocolate can be good for you? Dark chocolate seems to posses substantial amount of antioxidants and for the most part, the fats in nuts are unsaturated fats, including monounsaturated fats. Nuts also provide arginine, a substance that may help make the walls of the arteries more flexible and less prone to blockage from blood clot formation. Many nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B2, and are rich in protein, folate, fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium.

What Happened Last Week?

At last week’s meeting, we learned about the complex and costly world of clinical trials, thanks to Jake Lacayo of Amgen. There are hundreds of thousands of clinical trials ongoing in the United States at any given time, which is part of the 12-year, billion-dollar process it takes to bring a new drug to market these days. According to www.clinicaltrials.gov, there are around 75,000 studies in the U.S. right now, and 161,000 around the world.

On This Day in History

. . . In 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay was proclaimed the new heavyweight champion by defeating Sonny Liston in a 7th round technical knock-out. Liston was the odds-on favorite, having twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” and knock out Liston in the eighth round.
