Happy New Year Rotarians!
Wow, did I just label this 2014? And is the month already half-gone?
Last Week’s Meeting
We were joined as last week’s meeting by guests Fred Dixon and Dave Wolloch. Fred was a guest of Clay Sr. and Clay Jr., and is a senior investment strategist with Crowell Weedon, in town for a presentation. Dave is with Rabobank and is a fellow Rotarian, visiting us from the Ventura Club.
Our speaker last week was Jeremy Myer of Solar City. Jeremy fave a presentation to us about the history of the company and its founder. In addition to being the largest residential provider of solar, Solar City has also installed solar in some of the largest commercial projects in the country.
- If the sun was hollowed out, almost one million Earths could fit inside
- After burning all the Hydrogen, the Sun will continue on for about 130 million more years, after which it will expand to the point where it will engulf other planets, eventually the Earth
- The mass of the Sun is almost 330,000 times greater than that of the Earth . . . it contains 99.86% of the mass in the Solar System
- Light from the Sun reaches Earth in only 8 minutes, even though it travels an average distance of 150 million kilometers to get here
- The Sun has already burned off about half of its Hydrogen store, making it middle-aged. But it still has enough Hydrogen to burn for another 5 billion years or so.
- The temperature inside the Sun can reach 15 million degrees Celsius.
