Happy Tuesday Rotarians!

Today’s meeting . . . will be offsite! We will be hosted by Kathy Leahy at Goodwill Headquarters in Oxnard, 130 Lombard Street. We will be led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Bert Partida and Peter Higgins will offer the invocation.

Last Week’s Meeting

At last week’s meeting, we were joined by Marty Lieberman of Lieberman Consulting, and also by Robert Foster’s cousin Margaret from Australia. Welcome to all guests!!

Our honored guest and speaker was District Governor Jack McClenahan. District Governor McClenahan was lauded by Dick Regnier and others for a well-organized, motivational and highly successful district conference last week in San Luis Obispo. The District Governor’s remarks to us took us back about 25 years or so in Rotary history, to the first international conference he attended. That conference was historical for two significant things introduced: women in Rotary and Polio Eradication efforts. Both movements raised the global awareness of Rotary internationally, and brought about significant changes over this last quarter-decade.

Well-deserved recognition for George Benz, and thanks to he and Judy . . . through their efforts in hosting our Texas Hold ‘Em event, over $1,500 was raised for the Kenya water well project! Thanks to all who participated!!

Today marks the anniversary of Black Tuesday. On this day in 1929, Wall Street as investors traded 16,410,030 shares on the New York Stock Exhchange, losing billions of dollars, and wiping out thousands of investors. In the aftermath of Black Tuesday, America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression. The stock market crash of 1929 was not the sole cause of the Great Depression, but it was an accelerant. By 1933, nearly half of America’s banks had failed, and unemployment was approaching 15 million people, or 30 percent of the workforce. It would take World War II, and the massive level of armaments production taken on by the United States, to finally bring the country out of the Depression after a decade of suffering.

Anyone up for Happy Dollar Fun and Games? Say hello to the newest — and by far, the most adorable — member of the VanConas family. Our four-legged, furry friend is the tiniest ball of cuteness you’ve ever seen . . . your bulletin editor has fallen hopelessly in love, and also has $10 Happy Dollars for whoever can guess what we call him. Hint: we borrowed the name from a prominent 20th Century wartime leader.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
