Last Week’s Meeting
We were addressed last week by Dr. Jamillah Moore, Ph.D., Chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District. Dr. Moore has one year on the job, and joined us to talk about junior/community college opportunities throughout the state. The California community college system is the largest higher education system in the country, with 72 districts.
This year, our VCCCD has approximately 2800 students enrolled, down from an average of about 32000 students annually. Dr. Moore attributes the drop in enrollment to an improving job community, and a lower overall number of students graduating high school. The local community colleges over over 85 degrees, along with vocational and technical training and certificates. The goal of VCCCD is to not only prepare students for transfer to four-year universities and colleges, but to provide the community with a trained workforce.

This Day in History
In 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurred on Krakatoa, a small, uninhabited island in Indonesia. The massive explosion threw 5 cubic miles of earth up to 50 miles in the air. 36,000 people were killed in the explosion, which created 120-foot tsunamis, and could be heard up to 3,000 miles away.
