Recent Speakers
Our recent speakers have been interesting, engaging and topical. On August 6 we heard from Richard Atmore, Jr. a local cattleman with long roots in the county, and former President of the Ventura County Cattlemen’s Association. Richard runs cattle throughout the hills behind the foothills of Ventura, up to the urban population, and addressed the club on the benefits of grazing on the natural habitat, which includes weed abatement and helps contribute to return the land to its natural state. Richard also educated us about how controlled burning can maintain land for the benefit of the cattle, as well as the other species natural to the area.
Last week we heard from Celina Zacarias, Director of Community and Government Relations at Cal. State Channel Islands. This Day in History
On this day in . . .
1911 . . the first telegram around the world was sent via commercial service. The dispatch was sent by the New York Times in order to determine how fast a message could be sent around the world via telegraph cable. The message traveled more than 28,000 miles and through 16 different operators before being received by the original operator back in New York 16 minutes, 30 seconds later.
1977 . . . NASA launched Voyager II, an unmanned 1,820-pound spacecraft. It was the first of two crafts launched that year designed to coincide with a rare alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Aboard Voyager II was a 12-inch copper phonograph record called “Sounds of Earth.” Intended as a kind of introductory time capsule, the record included greetings in 60 languages and scientific information about Earth and the human race, along with classical, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll music, nature sounds like thunder and surf, and recorded messages from President Jimmy Carter and other world leaders.
Today’s trivia: What was the content of the message sent around the world in 1911?
