News and Notes: June 25, 2013 - Welcome President Cris!

Highlights of Spring

What a busy and productive spring we have had . . .Strawberry Shortcake booth at the Strawberry Festival where we raised thousands for the club while enjoying the berries . . . Annual Golf Tournament, which was hugely successful again this year thanks to the efforts of Tim Laubacher and many others . . . the recognition of well-deserved graduates of Oxnard High School at our annual awards luncheon meeting . . . Teacher Recognition awards continued through the Spring and we bestowed many well-deserving and hard-working teachers with baskets of goodies, and . . . . last, but not least, a rousing send-off to President John Kearney, who navigated the club through these events, along with many others all throughout the year.

Demotion Dinner

With the help of a celebrity panel of guests including Martha Stewart (aka Kelly Ventimiglia), Sean Connery (aka Mark Spellman) and the Dos Equis World’s Most Interesting Man (aka John Clay, Jr.), President John Kearney was sent off in style, with plenty of beer, lots of laughs, and much gratitude.

We welcome President Cris Fulwider this week! Well, actually next week . . . Cris is in Lisbon, Portugal this week for the Rotary International Convention.

Club Members Honored

The Oxnard Chamber of Commerce recently announced the recipients of the 2013 Community & Business Awards. Among the honorees are our very own Bill Belcher and wife Dale, who have been named the 2013 Distinguished Citizens of the Year. Collectively, Bill and Dale support not only the Rotary Club of Oxnard but also the California Strawberry Festival, Boy Scouts, the Gulls Wings Children’s Museum, and Soroptimists of Oxnard (just to name a few!) Dale was active in local government, having served as city Treasurer for a number of years. If there is a need in Oxnard, you can certainly rely on the Belchers to step forward and get it done.

This Day in History

On this day in 2009, Michael Jackson, one of the most commercially successful entertainers in history, dies at the age of 50 at his home in Los Angeles after suffering from cardiac arrest caused by a fatal combination of drugs given to him by his personal doctor, Conrad Murray. In the four years since his death, Dr. Murray was found guilty in the death of MJ and sentenced to four years in prison, his mother Katherine is waging war against her son’s concert promoter AEG in a wrongful death suit, his daughter Paris is undergoing treatment for a suicide attempt, and “Michael Jackson One,” a Cirque Du Soleil show based on the music and dance of the King of Dance is preparing to open in Las Vegas. Whatever happened to “Rest in Peace?”
